New York City Naturopathy Colleges

There are only a few schools in the country that grant naturopathy degrees, and students in the New York City area who are interested in pursing a degree in the field must be willing to travel a distance from home. Relevant undergraduate and/or graduate programs can be found at one Connecticut and two Long Island colleges, which are described below. The 46-credit-hour program combines didactic courses that focus on herbs, formulas and treatment strategies with clinical training that allows students to utilize and develop their knowledge. This program prepares students to take the licensing exam from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) to obtain Diplomate status in Chinese herbology.

New York College of Health Professions

The New York College of Health Professions is a private, non-profit school that has been in existence for over 25 years. It seeks to integrate holistic and Western medicine by providing programs in massage therapy, acupuncture, Oriental medicine, Tai Chi Chuan and holistic nursing. In addition to educational programs, the college offers onsite holistic therapies, including acupuncture, reflexology, massage and herbal medicine consultations.

This 185-credit-hour, 10-trimester program prepares students for careers as licensed acupuncturists with the ability to integrate herbal remedies with classic treatment methods. The curriculum includes courses in holistic techniques and methods, biological and clinical sciences and traditional Chinese medicine; topics in Asian bodywork, pharmacology and nutrition are also part of the program. Students also undertake training in yoga, Tai Chi Chuan or Qi Gong in order to understand body movement and enhance their effectiveness as practitioners. Graduates are prepared to sit for both the acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine exams administered by the NCCAOM.

University of Bridgeport

The University of Bridgeport, located in Bridgeport, CT, about 61 miles from downtown New York City, is the closest naturopathy college to New York City and one of only a very few naturopathy schools in the country. The Acupuncture Institute offers a master's degree program, and the College of Naturopathic Medicine grants the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree upon successful completion of the 4-year, full-time course of study. The school also runs an outpatient clinic where students provide supervised care to the community.

Master of Science in Acupuncture

The Master of Science in Acupuncture is a 3-year program that is broken into seven major areas of study: acupuncture techniques, Asian or herbal medicine or Western biomedicine; studies in movement and breathing, counseling and clinical services are also offered. Acupuncture students complete internships at the Health Sciences Center during their third year in the program.

Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine

The ND program covers a wide variety of medical studies. All students follow the same rigorous 8-semester curriculum which combines didactic coursework with supervised clinical experience. The first semester begins with classes in anatomy, biochemistry, histology, embryology, patient care and other areas. The following semesters cover a wide range of medical sub-disciplines, including Oriental medicine, hydrotherapy, physiology, microbiology and counseling.

Students complete the program by learning about minor surgery, sports medicine, oncology, dermatology and geriatrics. By the time of graduation, students should have successfully passed the first part of the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX I).
